Events & Speakers

Pre-Meeting Events

A Members Consultative Group meeting on the ALI project on World Trade Law will be held on Sunday, May 16, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the State Room. There is no charge to attend; however, for those who want to obtain CLE credit for attendance at this program and/or the project presentations at the Annual Meeting, there is a $100 administrative fee.

A CLE program on Legal Ethics will be held on Sunday, May 16, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the State Room. The program will examine the ethics and professional responsibility issue of representing organizations. Tuition is $150 for ALI members and project Advisers, $180 for all others.

Meeting Events

ABA President Carolyn B. Lamm will make remarks at the opening session on Monday, May 17. At 2:00 p.m. on Monday, The Hon. Stephen Breyer, Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, will speak about the topic “Making the Constitution Work: A Supreme Court Justice’s View.”

Members Reception

Members and guests are invited to attend a reception on Monday, May 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Newseum. Founded to educate the public about the value of a free press in a free society, the Newseum tells the stories of the world’s important events by taking visitors behind the scenes to experience how and why the news is made. The cost for this event is $85 per person. Drinks and heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served, and transportation is included.

Luncheon Honoring 2010 Life (25-year) Members and 50-year Members

A luncheon on Tuesday, May 18 at 12:45 p.m. in the State Room will honor 2010 life members and 50-year members. The luncheon speaker is Bennett Boskey, ALI Treasurer. The cost is $50 per person.

Annual Reception and Dinner

The Annual Dinner will be held on Tuesday, May 19 at 7:45 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom, preceded by a reception at 7:00 p.m. in the State Room. This year's dinner speaker is Seth P. Waxman, former Solicitor General of the United States. Black tie is optional. The total cost for the evening is $120 per person. Seating-arrangement requests can be made when purchasing tickets.

Special Session on New Project Development

On Wednesday, May 19 at 8:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom, ALI Director Lance Liebman and Program Committee Chair Paul L. Friedman will meet with interested members and guests to discuss the Institute's procedure for considering, selecting, and developing new projects. They are especially interested in soliciting members' suggestions and hearing their views on possible new projects or new formats for projects. A list of current projects and projects under consideration will be available in the Cabinet Room across from the ALI registration desk.


A luncheon on Wednesday, May 19 at 12:30 p.m. in the State Room will feature an address by Dean Christopher F. Edley, Jr., of Berkeley School of Law of the University of California. The cost is $50 per person.
